Kauai Beaches
There are 43 white sand beaches on Kauai, more beaches per
mile than any other Hawaiian Island. Dr. Stephen Leatherman
known as "Dr. Beach" released his annual list of
American's Best Beaches for 2001 and Poipu Beach was rated
#1 and is just a short walk or drive from the condo. Says
Leatherman; "This coral beach is known for its light
golden sand, which blends nicely with the crystal-blue water.
It is perfect for a range of activities because of its unique
`tombolo' shape, wherein flat water gradually grades into
a pulsating surf."
Poipu Beach
Poipu Beach is one of the safest beaches in Hawaii. On the
eastern edge, a protective jetty shelters a small cove called
Baby Beach. Here the water is only inches deep without any
noticeable waves and is perfect for toddlers. The water depth
in this section remains shallow for quite a distance and makes
it ideal for crawling around and splashing. Further to the
west, the water slopes normally from the shore and is satisfying
for beginner swimmers.
West of the cove a tombolo or sandbar separates another section
of beach. Just beyond the sandbar is the site of some of the
best snorkeling on Kauai. Poipu Beach can be a site for viewing
the rare Hawaiian Monk Seal. Monk seals swim great distances
and typically take their rest on beaches during the day. If
you are fortunate enough to see a Hawaiian Monk Seal, keep
your distance and stay outside the designated protected area
and enjoy the rare view.
Poipu Beach Park
Poipu Beach Park encompasses two of Poipu's most popular beaches,
Poipu Beach and Brennecke Beach. Swaying coco palms accent
a vast lawn, provide shade and silhouette dramatic sunsets.
Scattered pavilions and picnic tables offer respite from the
sun and a perfect spot for lunch. Poipu Beach Park has rest
room and shower facilities as well as a convenience market
and restaurant-bar just across a small street. Snorkel equipment,
body boards, surfboards and other beach equipment can be rented
at nearby activity outfitters. There is ample free parking
across from the park at the intersection of Hoowili and Hoone
Roads. Poipu Beach Park is within easy walking distance of
Poipu Crater.
Brennecke Beach
Kauai's Brennecke Beach, located at the eastern end of Poipu
Beach Park is world renowned for its easy to catch body boarding
and body surfing waves. Brennecke Beach was restored to its
original crescent bay shape with the help of the Kauai community
in 2001. Beach eroding seawalls were removed and a huge amount
of sand was added. Brennecke Beach is now better than anyone
can ever recall. Brennecke is a favorite with Kauai residents
and visitors alike. The condo has two boogie boards for body
boarding.
Heading East, Shipwreck Beach
Kauai's Shipwreck Beach on Keoneloa Bay is one of the largest
expanses of beach in the Poipu area. During much of the year,
Shipwreck Beach is best for strong swimmers and surfers due
to the powerful waves that break close to shore. However,
it is a great beach any time of the year to walk along, for
beach combing and sunbathing. Shipwreck Beach has a parking
facility at its eastern end and just beyond that is a great
wilderness shoreline trail that continues for a miles.
Mahaulepu Beach
Kauai's Mahaulepu Beach is as remote as you can get and reaching
Mahaulepu is somewhat of an adventure. Continue beyond the
eastern end of Poipu Road where the pavement gives way to
a dirt road until you reach a "Tee" intersection.
Turn right and proceed to a security shack where you may be
asked to produce I.D. and sign a liability release. Mahaulepu
Beach is on private property, so proceed with caution and
at your own risk. This vast, idyllic beach is popular with
Kauai residents and visitors alike because it is so large,
isolated and pristine. You are likely to find a stretch of
golden sand or dramatic sea cliff all to yourself.
Heading West, Polihale Beach
At the western most end of Kauai's famed Na Pali Coast is
a beautiful expanse of beach known as Polihale; home of the
spirits, in Hawaiian. Majestic cliffs frame this enormous
stretch of brilliant white sand. Though idyllically remote,
Polihale State Park facilities include showers, picnic tables
and rest rooms. Follow directions from a guidebook to find
this one.
Other Beaches
There are many other beautiful beaches in Kauai and I have
only listed some of the south and west beaches here. The north
shore has great beaches though they are sometimes not a good
choice in the winter. Hanalei Bay being an exception. Also
the beach at Kalapaki bay in front of the Marriott is a great
choice as well. Check out the guidebooks for more information
on other beaches.
